Outdoor Learning supports Literacy in P7

2nd Feb 2026

P7 pupils took part in an exciting micro-adventure writing lesson, which combined outdoor learning, literacy and digital skills. Pupils stepped outside into the school garden to explore familiar spaces in a new way, learning that even small areas can become interesting when we slow down and observe closely.

During the outdoor session, pupils chose a small spot in the school garden and used their senses to gather details. They listened carefully to sounds, noticed colours and textures and recorded interesting vocabulary using a template on clipboards. The focus was on observation and note-taking, helping pupils understand how writers collect ideas before writing. Many pupils were surprised by how much detail they noticed once they stopped to look closely

Back in the classroom, pupils used their notes to create short micro-adventure reports. They worked on structuring their writing with a clear introduction, descriptive middle section and reflective ending. The children applied sensory and figurative language to bring their chosen outdoor spaces to life and used digital tools to support their work. The fantastic work is now on display in the classroom! .
