Year 5 and 6 Teambuilding at Parkanaur with Speedwell

29th Jan 2024

Mr Morgan and Mr Beattie's classes had their first big day out of the calendar year, heading to Parkanaur Forest Park for a Teambuilding programme provided by the Speedwell Trust.

After a remarkably calm bus journey we were split into groups for our first activity in the courtyard. This was a game in which you had to pass a hoop around your circle without breaking the chain and we worked really well to achieve this goal!

After a much needed snack, we set off in our groups for the main activity - orienteering. We had to use a map to find our way around markers in the forest, which had various puzzles for us to ponder and solve. Everybody was able to use their map-reading, observation and logic skills to complete the task successfully, and most of us really enjoyed a lovely stroll through the forest - all that fresh air!

We had a break for lunch, and then it was back to work for our final task of the day. We were supposed to be going back out into the forest but unfortunately a few heavy showers made the equipment too slippery to use so it was decided that we stay indoors. Plan B was to work together in our groups to make bridges out of K'NEX construction kits. Some of these were quite complicated, but the groups cooperated well to sort out the problem and come up with solutions.

Finally we boarded the bus back to Omagh after a great day of activities with our classmates and very little writing. Thanks to Jodie and Miriam at Speedwell for organising and running the day, and for making sure that we didn't all get lost in the forest!
