OCPS goes ‘BACK TO THE ROOTS’ of learning!

13th Jun 2025

In honour of International Day of Play (Wednesday 11th June 2025), Omagh County Primary School went ‘BACK TO THE ROOTS’ of learning this week. Pupils from Nursery to Year 7 took part in a wide range of outdoor and play-based activities. Reconnecting with nature and each other. The event highlighted the importance of play and outdoor learning in children’s development.

Activities included forest school sessions, bird watching, science experiments and exciting ‘Hill at the High’ adventures. Classes teamed up across year groups to encourage collaboration and even managed to squeeze in a trip to the local play park. The week was rounded off with a special ‘Stay and Play’ afternoon for parents bringing smiles to faces young and old.

Teachers noted that the initiative not only supported physical development and well-being, but also enhanced teamwork, creativity, curiosity and confidence among pupils. “Play is such a vital part of learning,” said a spokesperson for the school. “It fosters imagination, problem-solving and social skills in ways that the classroom alone sometimes can’t.”

“BACK TO THE ROOTS” week was a resounding success, reminding the whole school community that some of the most meaningful learning happens outside – and often begins with a simple moment of play!
