Great Garden Bird Watch with Year 6

23rd Jan 2026

Year 6 took their annual trip to Arleston Park today to get involved in the RSPB Great Garden Bird Watch.

We came armed with bird identification sheets, clipboards tally charts and even binoculars.

We managed to spot a variety of birds including magpies, robins, blackbirds and wood pigeons. We saw lots of mallards on the pond. They were difficult to count but we think there were 16 (or 15 or 17 or 18) of them! A couple of herons were also kind enough to fly past on several occasions as part of the event.

Some of the birds were difficult to identify but we used clues about their size, shape and colour to (hopefully) work out what type of bird we had seen. Next week we will collect and share our results ready to send off to the RSPB.

This year we were very lucky to be joined by (former OCPS pupil) Reece England from FODC who talked to children all about birds and biodiversity. He also showed us how to make bird feeders to help our feathered friends through the cold winter months, and you may find some of the finished articles hanging off a branch in your gardens very soon!
